Interview: Hailee Steinfeld Finally Revealed How She Gets Her Hair So Damn Shiny

Hailee Steinfeld is working on lots of things all the time including red carpets, photo shoots, and music videos, but lately one of her biggest tasks is a very relatable one: drinking more water. The actor and singer’s partnership with Core Hydration has her thinking about her own hydration more than ever. “I’ve realized how much my skin-care routine has sort of evolved and become all about hydration,” the star tells Allure over a Zoom call. “You can take care of a lot from the inside out and hydration is key.”

Steinfeld finds that keeping her skin hydrated is especially important when traveling. Like many others, the 26-year-old has skin that likes to act up when she’s on an airplane — and unlike the average person, she’s sometimes on a plane weekly. “The plane won’t even take off and I’m already breaking out,” she says.

While figuring out how to calm her reactive skin on the go, Steinfeld experimented with a few products before landing on Mara Beauty’s Algae Enzyme Cleansing Oil and Sea Silk Lip Balm as her go-tos. “[The cleansing oil] is super hydrating and it gets all my makeup off, which is a dream,” she says. Both the cleanser and lip balm feature algae and moringa which cosmetic chemist Ginger King says are great for gentle cleansing and moisturizing.

Steinfeld’s quest for hydration doesn’t stop her at her face. She’s also keen on ensuring her hair is nourished. A quick scroll through her Instagram and you’ll see numerous pictures featuring the actor’s long, shiny, brown hair, but what many don’t know is that she’s been experiencing some breakage and dryness after bleaching her hair for the first time this past summer. “I have been religiously using Olaplex Bond Maintenance shampoo and conditioner and they have this oil that I use every now and then that I swear by. It’s definitely helped keep up the shine and hydration,” she says.

The decision to go lighter with her hair color was due in part to her music video for her song, “Coast,” which captures an easy, breezy, California vibe. “I was about to get into a new music space and [highlights] just fit this vibe of what I had in my mind,” she says of her honey-blonde highlights. “I was excited about the idea of a little change and I love it.”
